When the topic of fertility arises, the conversation often leans heavily toward female health—but did you know that male fertility accounts for one-third of all fertility issues? In fact, another third is due to both partners, and only the final third is attributed to female factors alone.
Yet somehow, the narrative tends to place most of the pressure—and even blame—on women. It’s time to change that.
🧬 Male Fertility: It’s About More Than Just Sperm Count
There’s a common misconception that a high sperm count is the only measure of male fertility. But the truth is, sperm health is far more complex than numbers alone.
To support successful conception, sperm need to:
Swim well: Speed and direction matter. They must reach the egg efficiently.
Be the right shape: Abnormal morphology (shape) can prevent fertilisation—and is also linked to recurrent miscarriage.
Survive and thrive in healthy semen: The quality of the surrounding fluid (semen) is just as crucial for protecting and transporting sperm.
In short, motility (movement), morphology (shape), and semen quality all play key roles in male reproductive health.
🧪 Time to Test, Time to Talk
Too often, fertility investigations start and end with the female partner. But with male factors being just as common, early and thorough testing for both partners is essential.
And men—it’s time to talk.
Struggling in silence doesn’t serve you, your partner, or your wellbeing. Opening up the conversation helps challenge outdated perceptions and creates a space for better support, better decisions, and ultimately, better outcomes.
💡 What Can You Do?
If you're trying to conceive, speak to your GP or fertility specialist about a semen analysis.
Support your reproductive health with lifestyle changes: a balanced diet, stress reduction, reduced alcohol, and avoiding tobacco and heat exposure.
Consider complementary therapies like reproflexology, which is tailored to support male reproductive health naturally.
And most importantly—talk about it.
Fertility is not just a women’s issue. Let’s normalise the conversation around male fertility, remove the stigma, and empower all individuals on the path to parenthood.
